DERBY DAY

Derby Day, the literary companion for all rugby-loving South Africans who are proud of their schools, is back in 2009 at a price that every schoolboy can afford.

Read the anecdotes of hundreds of former Springboks’s rugby days at school, not to mention the fascinating school and rugby histories of SA’s top 100 schools, for the recession-proof retail price of R100 only.

Incentivising the Schools to Sell

An awesome book about schoolboy rugby deserves to be seen next to the rugby field of every big local derby, and so the Derby Day are offering schools 30% percent commission (R30) to sell the book through their established school networks to earn money for the school.

Whether you are a schoolboy, a secretary, a rugby coach, or a member of your school’s PTA or OBU, anyone is welcome to earn some extra cash –— at zero risk.

How Sales Work

Simply provide the team at Derby Day with the relevant contact details for the person responsible for the stock, and we will post you copies of Derby Day (available in English or Afrikaans), as well as the awesome poster of the 2007 World Cup winning Springboks in their school jerseys, to arrive in time for the start of the 2009 schoolboy rugby season.

For every copy sold at R100, we’ll give you R30. By simply setting up a point of sale next to the tuckshop or alongside the 1st XV field, and putting up a poster or two in the school halls marketing when and where you will be selling from, you too can sell the popular Derby Day book and earn some much-needed extra cash in these tough economic times.

*A minimum of 16 books (two boxes) needs to be ordered to ensure free delivery. Stock is issued on a ‘sale or return’ basis, so there is no risk involved on the part of the seller.

Marketing of Derby Day

As if the low retail price of R100 wasn’t incentive enough, FNB (proud sponsors of Derby Day) will also be marketing the book aggressively as part of their involvement in SA schoolboy rugby. This will happen at all FNB Classic Clashes, as well as on the Classic Clashes website and TV show.

The plan is simply to ensure that as many schoolkids have Derby Day to read at home, hopefully inspiring them to learn more about their school, the history of rugby in South Africa, as well as picking up some tips from the featured Springboks who were rugby-playing schoolboys once themselves.

About Derby Day

Derby Day is a rocking rugby road trip across the length and breadth of the land of the Springboks, visiting over 100 South African schools and towns, learning about their histories, chatting to the rugby coaches, and interviewing the famous players that went to the school. It is 400 pages of action photos and old boy anecdotes, player insights and rugby traditions. Derby Day is for all South Africans who love their rugby and are proud of their school.

Other features of Derby Day include an insightful history of rugby union, how the game spread to South Africa and the role rugby has played in our country’s history, as well as historical features on all the towns visited - so as to give the schools, and the rugby they play, the proper context.

Praise for Derby Day

"We have all at some point stood around a fire debating whose school is the oldest, which player came from which school and which school has produced the most Springboks? This book answers all those questions and more. Do yourself a favour and go out and get it now!" - Graeme Wepener, Rugby 365

"If you go back to any rugby player’s memoirs, he talks about the fun and enjoyment of schoolboy rugby… And this book… that I got a couple of weeks back… it brings out the fun in schoolboy rugby, it’s not just a statistical history of rugby in South Africa. It’s a fun book. I reckon it’s a must on anyone’s shelf in South Africa." - Mornè du Plessis, ex-Springbok Captain

"…Nurse must be commended for driving his vintage Alfa Spider convertible across South Africa, visiting one hundred plus Springbok incubation tanks and compiling all of it in 400 pages. This lively, loose ruck is filled with photos, anecdotes, insights, rivalries, pride, history, old boys and traditions; and like a leggy librarian at an all boys' school, Derby Day is sure to get rugby players reading." - GQ, September 2008

"Genius!" - Bob Skinstad, ex-Springbok Captain
