After producing and studying a multitude of statistics, we come to the final FNB Top 20 for 2009 with, unsurprisingly, Grey College on top.

The big match was in Stellenbosch when a weakened Paul Roos side beat an even more weakened Grey College side by three kicks to one, Grey's first defeat since 2006.

One thing is now abundantly clear - Grey College are far and away the Number 1 school in the FNB Top 20. The other 19 are probably all pretty close, one able to beat the other on any given day, but Grey are exceptional.

The number of matches is shrinking fast but still both the Greys, Glenwood, Waterkloof, Outeniqua, Selborne Die Brandwag, Bishops, Die Brandwag, AHS Kroonstad, Boland Landbou, Dr EG Jansen, Drostdy, Goudveld, Ben Vorster, Centurion, and Framesby were all in action.

There were some big matches this weekend. In Pretoria Glenwood played Affies, in Bloemfontein the two Greys met, Goudveld in Welkom and in Paarl there was that Interschools to beat all Interschools. The results of these matches have had a great effect on our FNB Top 20 for this week.

This is the first FNB Top 20 of the third term. In several parts many teams have stopped playing. There are still competitions on the go and the southern part of the country carries on enjoying rugby football.

Most schools are not playing at present, what with Craven Week trials and exams, though some of those who do best at exams actually play at this time. Still there have been some interesting results.

There were few matches this last, long weekend, but we have rewarded teams that have particularly done well - Waterkloof, Monument, Selborne and Boland Landbou.

KES suffered their first defeat of the year, which cost them a few places in that close part of the Top 20. In fact the whole of the Top 20 is close.

It seems that being second on the FNB Top 20 is the most vulnerable position of all. This year Paul Roos, Affies, Paarl Boys' High and Outeniqua have all been there and dropped down. Last weekend second-placed Paul Roos were the ones to come unstuck.

It was an awkward week this for the FNB Top 20 because so many schools did not play. There were trials here and there and then there was some wet in the Cape that meant that three of our top schools did not have a game.

These long weekends do not make things easier as many schools have breaks or play at different times. Gathering scores is less easy.

Yoh! We have had a big weekend behind us in which several of the country's top schools have been playing against each other. This has had a seismic effect on the FNB Top 20.

There was the big Top-20 clash this weekend when Grey College went down to the coast from Bloemfontein and played Grey High in Port Elizabeth. It's still tight at the top.

Lots of teams have not played as Bondedag took over in the north with the approach of Craven Week. So we shall record this Top 20 and then stay in abeyance until rugby gets going again next term.

The top ten schools which played won well - Paarl Gim in a soggy Interschools, Affies, Monnas, Marais Viljoen, Boland Landbou, Westville and Kearsney. None of the schools in that group lost.

The only notable schools rugby this past weekend was in the finals of the Media24 competition. The really significant one there was the Outeniqua-Dr EG Jansen clash in the Big Schools, which Outeniqua won, scoring four tries to one. Outeniqua continue to move up.

Outeniqua continue their powerful surge. They beat Paarl Gim and Paul Roos in three days and a week later accounted for Marais Viljoen to reach the Final of the Media24 competition.

The top schools are back in action after a hectic time at festivals and the Craven Week. Immediately there have been some upsets which make the FNB Top 20 as hard as ever.Nelspruit and HTS Vereeniging come in as their performnces are so improved of late.

Monument power ahead of Boland Landbou this week with two powerful displays in a week as they continue to play many matches. Down the list Noord-Kaap of Kimberley, after their derby victory over Diamantveld, and St Charles of Pietermaritzburg come into the FNB Top 20 for the first time this year.

When the Blouskool play the Rooiskool in Kroonstad sparks fly. Huge crowds arrive and everybody picks sides. This year the Blouskool won - as they have been doing massively all year. Apart from the Rooiskool, there is no competition for them in their area.

There are fewer matches now but there have also been some top flight matches - great schools going head to head with each other with a few surprising results which have produced changes in our FNB Top 20, where so many great rugby schools run each other so close.

Possibly the outstanding result of the weekend was Waterkloof' victory over Monument, a big turnabout from what happened earlier in the season and ending Monnas' reign as Beeld champions.

Only three of the teams in the FNB Top 20 played this last weekend - Paul Roos, Bishops and Marlow. Two of those teams met.
